Duration
Design: 8 weeks
Overview
The Louisa Design System, conceived to strike a balance between guidance and creativity, emphasizes adaptability and innovation within a team of diverse designers. As a Senior Product Designer, my role was pivotal in contributing to this dynamic design system.
Challenge: Customizability
The primary challenge was to ensure the design system was highly customizable, offering a multitude of variations and styles without sacrificing usability.
Objective: Balance Complexity
The objective was to strike a delicate balance, providing diverse styles and variations while maintaining a user-friendly and efficient system.
Contribution to Objective:
My contribution, as part of a collaborative team of three senior designers, involved a 6-week timeline using tools like Figma, Confluence, and Slack.
Process: Thinking Differently
We established guiding principles to encourage innovative thinking and prevent common pitfalls seen in other organizations.
Flexibility in components was crucial to nurture innovation, allowing for deviation and creativity.
Ensured design components aligned with their coded counterparts to prevent discrepancies. Tokens were aligned with the MUI system.
Outcome: Categorization System
Implemented a categorization system for components: “Verified” for stability and production use, and “Unverified” for experimental or unfinished components.
User-Friendly Documentation: Developed documentation within Figma using actual components, making it easy for designers to copy and paste elements. Included screens built with these components as examples.
Seamless Integration with Code: Components with verified status in Figma had corresponding code in Storybook, simplifying the process for engineers and maintaining consistency.
